Is alternative firmware for Sony Readers free for end users, no strings attached?

Yes.

Will alternative firmware damage the original firmware?

No, it installs by just copying files to the internal memory of the device and can be removed by deleted the previously copied files. On PRS-300 devices users have an option to select which firmware to load — from eBook Applications or original from Sony.

Just installed 1.7 on my PRS-505 but I can’t seem to get it to read any PDFs.

Try re-uploading firmware files to the device. If this will not help, format internal memory and re-upload the firmware. Users reported that in some cases you may need to repeat formatting 2-3 times to get firmware working.

The new firmware fails to load on my PRS-300. When I select the ebook applications firmware in the startup page, the PRS-300 cycles for a while and then the startup page reappears. I can only select the Sony firmware.

How to add a new dictionary?

1. Download archive with your SratDict dictionary, you can do it from many online resources, for example: http://reciteword.cosoft.org.cn/stardict-iso/stardict-dic/. The archive should contain 3 files:

  • dictionary_name.dict.dz
  • dictionary_name.idx
  • dictionary_name.ifo

2. Copy these 3 files into the new folder
3. Copy this new folder into “dictionary” folder in the internal memory of the device
4. Reset your device

How to add a custom font type?

In order to add a new font in the list of the available fonts please copy .ttf file into fonts folder in the internal memory of your device and restart the eReader by switching it completely off.

How to delete the alternative firmware?

In order to remove eBook Applications fimware from the device it is necessary to connect it to USB and remove “ebook applications” and “test-startup” (if exists) folders from the internal memory.
